Yesterday was my egg retrieval. It went really well. We arrived at the clinic at 12:30. They put me under general anesthesia which is always such a weird experience. I just fell asleep and then woke up like 45 minutes later. I was pretty out of it - according to Stuart. I don't remember much, just that it wasn't too bad. I was sore and kind of crampy afterwards so I just went home and lounged around all night. I can't remember the last time I've done that - it was a bit of a challenge, but kind of nice.
Today, I'm still a little sore - there really isn't pain, you can just tell that things have been tampered with and there's some discomfort.
They were able to extract 12 eggs! They say average is between 8 and 10 so 12 is really great - but the girl before me had 18 so I guess I kept thinking I hadn't done a good job. They took the sperm sample right after my procedure and then mixed the two.
The doctor called us tonight to let us know we have 9 fertilized eggs! He was very proud of me. (his exact words). That is great news, I was actually really nervous about the fertilization process. I kept thinking they'd call me and say something like, "well, the sperm didn't do as well as we hoped, looks like you have some sperm issues." It would have been so frustrating to hear that since that is what we've thought all along. But luckily, nothing of the case happened and we're sitting pretty.
So, I go in on Tuesday for the embryo transfer. The clinic will not transfer more than 3 and recommends you choose either 2 or 3. We've opted for 3. My thinking is that I'd rather have triplets than no babies - so I'll take the gamble. When talking to the doctor he reiterated my thoughts exactly.
The doctor will pick the 3 healthiest embryos and transfer them into my uterus on Tuesday. He will let us know if it will be worth it to freeze the remainder. I hope we get to freeze at least 3 more so that we can do this again without all the hassle of medications.
It's so nice to have the end in sight...or as one friend put it...the beginning. Let's hope!
Thank you to all of you who have called, texted, dropped of cookies and treats, and sent your prayers. We just really have felt so loved and supported - it means so much.
Thank you thank you!
Congrats!! That's so awesome! Good things are happening - that can only mean there are more good things in store, I'm SURE of it! When Jake said "nine fertilized eggs" out loud, I hadn't see your post yet and I thought that mean that you were having all 9 implanted... Can you even IMAGINE????? Three sounds like a nice round number. :) Woo hoo, you guys!
