Bridge Over Troubled Water

When I was little, I used to sit in my basement in the dark and listen to Simon and Garfunkel. No joke. I loved the harmonies, the powerful crashing drums, the guitars, and the classic good tunes. Everyone has a way of dealing with sorrow. My sister-in-law says she likes to watch sad movies, others eat comfort food, etc... My coping methods include sleep and Simon and Garfunkel. Whenever I'm feeling a bit down, I get in my car and turn to Simon and Garfunkel. It's my "sad music." It comforts me in a way other things can't. Maybe because it reminds me of being a carefree kid, who knows. S & G got me through a few rough days this week.

This time, I was hooked on the song Bridge Over Troubled Water. It's cheesy and beautiful all at the same time. The words mean a lot to me. It talks about how friends and people help you through the hard times. They are literally our bridges over troubled water. I've had a few special bridges this week. Stuart is a saint. I love him. Words can't describe his strength and support. I ask him every day to tell me that everything will be okay, he does with a smile.

Old long-time friends in town took my mind off life and helped me sort through my feelings, not to mention lots of kind e-mails and text messages from those friends who were not in town. Phone calls with my parents and sister put things in perspective. My in-laws took care of me all Christmas break and provided all the happy distractions necessary to realize life goes on. I got to talk to my missionary brother on Christmas and just hearing his voice made everything seem okay. And as I said in my previous post, turning to my Savior in times of sorrow has made all the difference.

Everything will be okay. Thank you friends for helping me over some troubled waters. Now, I sail onward and forward (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Bridge Over Troubled Water
By Simon and Garfunkel

When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all

I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you

I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way

See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

  3. When I was 14 years old I learned this song for a piano recital and played it ALL THE TIME for several years. Grandpa still teases me about it. Now this song will have a new meaning for me. . . Sail on "Silver Girl." There are wonderful times ahead.
